Avoiding a Deadly Avalanche

By admin | December 17th, 2008

Ascend some of the tallest peaks in the world and you could always encounter an avalanche. Unfortunately, avalanches are difficult to predict but there are some signs that an area might have had a recent avalanche or that an avalanche is imminent.

1. First, avalanches are most common on slopes in a range of 30-45 degrees.

2. Look for depressions in the snow that look like an inverted v with an accumulation of snow at the base.

3. A steep rise in temperatures.

4. Most people that have experienced an avalanche remember a  loud whoomph sound which is a sign that  you are in an area of avalanche activity or that an avalanche is imminent.

5. Heavy winds that can leave much of the snow on one side of the mountain.

6. Cracks along your route.

These are just some of the signs of an avalanche. Know the signs to survive.
